Story
Domaine de la Monardière is nestled deep in Southern Rhone’s famous Vacqueyras region, famous for its quality wines and having some of the lowest grape yields in france.
A relatively new domaine, founded in 1987, the second generation of winemaking started in 2007, when the estate also switched to organics. And when it comes to biodiversity, there’s no stopping them. Their 22 hectares of vines are being planted with trees, hedges and cover crops.
We love this winery for treading the line between respectfully traditional and exciting and innovative. Exciting stuff indeed.
- philosophy:
- Certified organic viticulture
- A true respect for the land which works beyond organics.
- Working with massal selection to protect the legacy of the vineyard
- No additions other than a little SO2.
- Fermentation is spontaneous
- The vineyards:
- 22 hectares of vines
- Sandstone soil with limestone and clay marl - very typical for the region
- Very old vines, some Grenache was planted in 1945.
- Hand harvested fruit and much of the vineyard work during the year is also done by hand.
