Story
If you don’t know Mas de Libian, you’re in for a treat.
This is a small family farm in the Southern Rhône whose history stretches right back to 1670 when it was a hunting lodge and manor house.
The family turned to wine in the 1970s and were well ahead of their time, choosing to farm organically from the start. They were certified biodynamic 2005.
Nowadays, the estate is known as being a pioneer in quality organic and biodynamic wine from Southern Rhône, wines that are sought after all over the world. The estate is still in the family, run by Helene and her husband Alain as well as Helene’s sister Catherine, who are all doing a stellar job of continuing the good work of their parents and grandparents.
- philosophy
- Certified organic and biodynamic - these vines have never before seen a single drop of chemicals.
- A natural approach in the cellar, with natural yeasts, low sulphites and nothing else added. These are wines that are made in the vineyard.
- Ageing is largely done in stainless steel and demi-muids (large oak barrels).
- The vineyards:
- Horses are used for ploughing.
- Hand harvested fruit.
- South-southwest facing vineyards.
- The Côtes du Rhône soils are largely limestone and clay whereas the Côtes du Rhône Villages plots are filled with red clay and the famous galet stones that are found in Châteauneuf du Pape.
