Piedmont is the crown jewel of Italian winemaking. Home to famous names such as Barolo and Barbaresco, the rolling hills of Northern Italy have brought forth incredible wines. Nebbiolo is the main red grape variety here.
Combined with Piedmont’s Serravallian marl soils, the grape is responsible for age-worthy, complex wines that are frequently thought to be some of the best in the world. Two other red grapes are often found in Piedmont, the dark-fruited Barbera and the blue- fruited Dolcetto, both good value and worth checking out.
Piedmont’s bright, zesty whites tend to be dominated by Arneis and Gavi. Despite Piedmont’s strong roots in traditional winemaking, the number of organic, biodynamic and natural winemakers in the region seems to rise every year.
