Story
Agricola Ancestrale is located on the impossibly beautiful island of Salina off the northern coast of Italy. This is the land of volcanoes, refreshing breezes and thousands of hours of sunshine a year - all perfect for growing grapes.
Antonino Caravaglio and Giuseppe Mascoli farm around 4 hectares of vineyards, largely dedicated to the local white grape Malvasia di Lipari. Everything here is done by hand, from the harvest to the fava beans cover crops. They call it “peasant farming” as an homage to their traditional winemaking and farming methods.
We’re delighted to be working with Agricola Ancestrale, they are everything we look for in wine. Authentic, nature-driven and delicious.
- Philosophy:
- Organic viticulture
- Spontaneous fermentation
- A “light touch” in the cellar. No fining or filtration
- The vineyard:
- 4 hectares of land divided into small plots around the island
- All vineyards are on the side of an extinct volcano overlooking the Mediterranean.
- Rich volcanic soils
- All local grape varieties - Malvasia delle Lipari, Catarratto, Nerello Mascalese and Corinto Nero
- Vines are up to 70 years old with low yielding fruit.
